Craving comfort food without the hassle? This one-pan cheesy broccoli and orzo is the ultimate weeknight dinner—creamy, cheesy, and loaded with tender broccoli. Best of all, it’s ready in under 30 minutes with just one pan to clean!

Some nights, you just don’t have the energy to cook an elaborate meal.

You’ve had a long day, and the last thing you want is to deal with a sink full of dishes.

That’s exactly how I felt the first time I made this one-pan cheesy broccoli and orzo.

It started with a craving for something comforting—like mac and cheese—but I also wanted to include some greens to keep it balanced.

I peeked into my fridge and spotted a head of broccoli that was begging to be used, and before I knew it, this recipe was born.

This dish is warm, creamy, and cheesy, with just the right amount of broccoli to make you feel good about eating it.

Whether you’re feeding a hungry family or just cooking for yourself, this recipe is easy to make and always hits the spot.

Why You’ll Love This Cheesy Broccoli and Orzo Recipe

One Pan, Zero Stress: No need for multiple pots and pans. Everything cooks together in one skillet, making cleanup a breeze.

Ready in 30 Minutes: When you’re short on time but still want a homemade meal, this orzo and broccoli recipe comes together quickly.

Versatile: Serve it as a standalone dish, pair it with grilled chicken or fish, or use it as a side dish for a larger spread.

Ingredients for Creamy Broccoli and Orzo

Orzo: Orzo is the perfect ingredient for this recipe because it gives this dish a creamy finish by soaking up all the flavors.

If you’re looking for a gluten-free option, swap orzo with quinoa or rice. But keep in mind that it might differ in taste.

Broccoli: Chop them into bite-sized pieces so they cook evenly.

Frozen broccoli also works if that’s what you have on hand—just toss it in directly without thawing.

Cheddar Cheese: Sharp cheddar is the best for this dish, with its nice cheesy flavor. You can experiment with blends like mozzarella or Gruyère if you want to mix things up.

Parmesan Cheese: Just a bit of Parmesan enhances the dish with a nutty, salty taste that pairs well with the cheddar.

Garlic: I recommend using fresh garlic for the best flavor. You will also need to mince the garlic.

Butter: Used to sauté the garlic and toast the orzo. Butter enhances the richness of the dish, but olive oil can work as a substitute.

Broth: Cooking the orzo in bone or vegetable broth instead of water infuses the pasta with a rich flavor.

Half and Half or Milk or Cream: A splash adds creaminess to the dish, making the sauce silky and smooth. Use cream for a richer dish or milk for something lighter.

Seasonings: I used a mixture of Italian seasoning, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes for heat.

How to Make Cheesy Orzo and Broccoli

Step 1: Toast the Orzo and Sauté the Garlic

Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat.

Add the minced garlic and cook for about 1 minute until fragrant.

Stir in the orzo and toast it for a few minutes, stirring frequently, until the pasta turns golden. This step is crucial and adds a nice flavor to the dish.

Step 2: Simmer the Orzo and Broccoli

Pour in the broth and bring it to a gentle simmer. Add the chopped broccoli, salt, black pepper, red pepper flakes, and Italian seasoning. Stir to combine, and cover the skillet.

Cook, stirring occasionally, until the orzo is tender and has absorbed most of the liquid, and the broccoli is bright green and tender.

If the pan gets too dry, add a splash of water or broth to keep everything moist.

Step 3: Add the Cheese and Cream

Reduce the heat to low and stir in the half and half or milk or cream.

Add the shredded cheddar cheese and Parmesan, stirring until the cheeses melt into a creamy sauce that coats the orzo and broccoli.

Step 4: Season and Serve

Taste and season with salt and pepper as needed.

Serve immediately, garnished with extra Parmesan or a sprinkle of fresh parsley for a pop of color.

Serving Suggestions and Customizations

Make it Spicy: Add a pinch of red pepper flakes or a dash of hot sauce for a spicy twist.

Add Protein: Toss in cooked chicken tenders, crispy bacon, or oven-baked salmon for a more filling meal.

Make it Vegan: Use plant-based butter, milk, and cheese to make a vegan-friendly version of this orzo and broccoli recipe.

Swap the Veggies: Don’t have broccoli? Try spinach, peas, or asparagus instead for a different flavor profile.

Tips for Perfect Cheesy Broccoli and Orzo

  1. Use Freshly Grated Cheese: Pre-shredded cheese often contains anti-caking agents that can make your sauce grainy. Grating your own cheese ensures a smooth, creamy sauce.
  2. Don’t Overcook the Broccoli: Adding the broccoli while the orzo cooks ensures it stays tender yet slightly crisp rather than mushy.
  3. Adjust the Consistency: If the dish feels too thick, add a splash of broth or milk to loosen it up before serving.
