When I started my wellness journey, I felt so confused by all the diets people were talking about.
There was keto, gluten-free, plant-based eating—you name it, I tried it! (You can read about my experiences with different diets.)
While some of them worked for a little while, none of them felt like something I could stick with forever.
That’s when I learned about the power of a balanced plate.
This easy method changed how I looked at food. It helped me eat better, feel better, and even lose weight—all without feeling like I was giving up my favorite foods or food groups.
A balanced plate makes eating healthy simple and fun.
It’s a way to make sure every meal gives your body what it needs, and it’s super easy to follow.
Here’s how you can create your own balanced plate at every meal.
Step 1: Fill Half Your Plate with Vegetables and Fruits
The easiest way to make sure you’re getting everything your body needs is to eat a mix of colors. And that’s where fruits and vegetables come in.
Think of it like creating a rainbow on your plate.

For example, you can add green spinach, orange carrots, and red bell peppers for a colorful and nutritious mix. You can also add fruits like blueberries or apple slices to bring some natural sweetness.
If you’re not a fan of raw veggies, don’t worry.
You can steam, roast, or stir-fry them to bring out their flavors. Roasted broccoli with a sprinkle of olive oil and garlic, for instance, tastes amazing and keeps all the good nutrients intact.
Fruits are also a great way to add variety to your plate.
They’re naturally sweet and come with lots of vitamins and antioxidants that help protect your body from sickness. Try mixing them into salads or having a small portion on the side.
Pro Tip: Don’t be afraid to try new fruits and vegetables. Each one has its own unique benefits, and you might discover a new favorite! A fun way to start is by picking one new fruit or veggie every week to add to your meals.
Step 2: Add a Quarter Plate of Lean Protein
Protein is one of the most important parts of your meal. It helps your body grow, repair itself, and stay strong.
Without enough protein, you might feel tired or even get sick more often. That’s why this step is so important!
Good sources of protein include beef, chicken, fish, eggs, tofu, or beans like lentils and chickpeas.

If you don’t eat meat, don’t worry. There are lots of plant-based proteins that work just as well, like edamame, tempeh, or even quinoa.
Protein also keeps you full longer, so you’re less likely to feel hungry right after eating.
Pro Tip: A serving of protein should be about the size of your palm. This helps keep portions just right.
Step 3: Include a Quarter Plate of Whole Grains or Starchy Vegetables
Because of diet culture, we’ve been taught to demonize carbs–especially for those trying to lose weight. But in all honesty, carbs are essential.
Carbs give you energy, but it’s important to choose the right kind.
Whole grains like brown rice, quinoa, or whole-grain pasta are great options. Starchy veggies like sweet potatoes or corn can also fit here.
Choose whole grains over white bread or white rice whenever you can. They have more fiber and keep you full longer.
Step 4: Add a Little Healthy Fat
Healthy fats are important for your brain and heart. Fats help your body absorb certain vitamins like A, D, E, and K, making them a key player in your diet.
Avocado, nuts, seeds, and olive oil are all good choices. But remember, fats are high in calories, so you don’t need a lot.

For example, you could add a slice of avocado to your salad, sprinkle some chia seeds on your yogurt, or drizzle a little olive oil over your roasted vegetables.
These fats not only provide health benefits but also make your food taste better.
Step 5: Drink Plenty of Water
Make sure to drink water with your meal. Staying hydrated helps your body work better. Skip sugary drinks and go for water, herbal tea, or sparkling water instead.
Pro Tip: Add lemon, mint, or cucumber to your water to make it taste even better.
Bonus: Add Flavor Without Extra Calories
Instead of using a lot of salt or sugar, try adding herbs, spices, or lemon juice to make your meals taste great. This keeps your food healthy and delicious.
