I first stumbled upon cycle-syncing meal prep during my weight loss journey… something I talk about a lot on my TikTok.
I was at a place where it felt like my body was working against me, no matter how “healthy” I tried to eat.
I’d be consistent, then suddenly crave everything under the sun right before my period… and then beat myself up for it. Sound familiar?
Everything changed when I discovered cycle syncing after reading “Fast Like a Girl“ by Dr. Mindy Pelz.
That book opened my eyes to how much our hormones affect what we need, crave, and burn.
It helped me understand that we’re not supposed to eat the same way every single week.
I realized I wasn’t failing… I just wasn’t working with my body.

Now I plan my meals around my cycle, and it’s made a massive difference in how I feel, how I eat, and how my body responds.
I’m not a doctor, so this post isn’t intended as medical advice; it’s simply what has worked for me.
So, please consult your healthcare provider before making any changes.
If you’re curious about how to start cycle-syncing your meals, here are four ways I adjust my diet based on my cycle phases.
1. During My Period: Light, Easy-to-Digest Meals
When my period starts, my energy usually drops… and so does my appetite.
I used to push through with the same heavy meals, but now I see this phase as a time for reset and rest.
Mindy recommends keeping carbs lower during this time to support natural hormonal shifts, and I’ve found that doing that works for me.
My meal prep looks pretty minimal this week.
I opt for lighter proteins, such as eggs or salmon, and a variety of warming, brothy foods like vegetable soups or bone broth.
I also lean into iron-rich ingredients like spinach, lentils, beets, etc, because let’s be real… we’re losing a lot of iron during this phase.
This is not the time to go hard in the kitchen.
I keep things simple, nutrient-dense, and easy to digest.
I also try to remain consistent with my vitamin intake around this time.
2. In the Follicular Phase: Fresh and Energizing
Right after my period ends, my energy comes back, and I feel like myself again.
Estrogen levels start to rise during this phase, and it usually lifts my mood as well.
It’s also when I feel most curious and creative with blogging.
I eat lots of fresh produce, lean proteins, and fiber-rich grains like quinoa.
Smoothie bowls and colorful salads make a comeback here.
My meals are light but nutrient-dense.
I keep my carbs moderate, and if I intend to do a heavy workout during that phase, I opt for options like sweet potatoes or brown rice to help fuel my workouts.
This is also when intermittent fasting feels the easiest.
I can fast for longer periods without feeling drained, which matches what Dr. Pelz recommends during this phase.

3. Around Ovulation: High Protein and Detox Support
Ovulation is when I feel the most magnetic… my skin glows, my energy is high, and I usually feel like socializing more.
I also push myself a bit more with workouts during this time, so I make sure I’m fueling with enough protein.
I include lots of eggs, tofu, salmon, avocados, and leafy greens.
I also support detox with foods like broccoli, cauliflower, and berries.
This helps my body clear out extra estrogen that can build up during ovulation.
I still keep my carb intake balanced… maybe a smoothie with banana or some roasted veggies with lentils.
I try to focus more on hydration and fiber during this time to stay regular and support hormone balance.
4. In the Luteal Phase: Comfort Food with a Plan
This used to be the hardest phase for me. The cravings, mood dips, bloating… it always threw me off track.
But once I learned that my body actually needs more carbs here to support rising progesterone, it all made sense.
Now I plan for it.
I increase my healthy carbs with oats, sweet potatoes, lentils, and even rice noodles.
I still keep the meals nourishing, but I lean into the coziness. Think warming stews, baked veggies, and one-pan meals that don’t take much effort.
Meal prepping during this phase helps me stay on track because I know my energy might dip a bit closer to my period.
I also give myself permission to eat more and rest more… it’s what my body is asking for.
Since starting cycle-syncing meal prep, I’ve had fewer cravings, better energy, and real progress with my weight goals.
I feel more grounded and in tune with what my body needs, rather than forcing it to stick to the same routine all month.
If you’re curious about trying this, start by tracking your cycle and paying attention to how your body feels.
Notice the shifts in hunger, energy, and mood. Then, start building meals around those changes.
This has been one of the most empowering parts of my health journey.
I hope it gives you something new to explore, too.
