The first thing I did on my wellness journey, especially when I started taking my diet more seriously, was to look for the best plant-based superfoods to fuel myself.
If you don’t already know, eating plant-based requires a lot of work and conscious effort to ensure you are getting adequate nutrients.
If you eat veggies every day without considering their nutritional profile, you risk developing deficiencies that can have an adverse effect on your health.Â
Thus, with this blog post, I want to highlight the plant-based superfoods that helped me (and continue to help) ensure that I get all the nutrients my body needs.
What are plant-based superfoods?
Just as the name suggests, plant-based superfoods are foods that are packed with a powerhouse of nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and healthy fats, making them essential for maintaining optimal health and well-being.
One thing I notice a lot in people who transition to a vegan or plant-based lifestyle is that they often eat too many carbs and less protein or healthy fats.
Don’t get me wrong—carbs are a necessary resource for our bodies, especially when we need energy. However, eating too many carbs can pose some health risks in the long term, such as insulin resistance and Type 2 diabetes.
Thankfully, by eating these plant-based superfoods, you can ensure a healthy balance between protein, carbohydrates, and fats, providing your body with the basic essentials it needs to function.
The best plant-based superfoods you can eat
1. Quinoa

When I first discovered Quinoa, I was skeptical. It seemed like this ‘wanna-be’ rice alternative that didn’t have the texture or flavor of rice.
However, after experimenting in the kitchen with it and preparing several dishes like this curried quinoa, I fell madly in love with this grain.
What makes this a great plant-based superfood is that it is a complete protein high in fiber and rich in minerals such as magnesium, iron, and B vitamins.Â
If you are on a weight loss journey or just looking for a better alternative to rice, I suggest using quinoa.
This superfood is so versatile that it can be eaten by itself, added to salads, or used to make plant-based Buddha bowls.
The possibilities are endless with this grain, so I recommend you don’t skimp out on it.
2. Chia Seeds

Discovering chia seeds was like a gift from the universe. This plant-based superfood contains protein, omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, antioxidants, and iron.
Also, for all my gals and guys who struggle with constipation and bowel movement problems, chia seeds may solve your problems due to their high fiber content.
The great thing about chia seeds is that they can be used in various recipes. From your regular overnight oats to your smoothie bowls, chia seeds can be easily tossed into these dishes to add fiber, nutrients, and flavor.
3. Lentils

When I transitioned to a plant-powered lifestyle, this was one of the first items I began incorporating into my meals.
Although the taste might be off-putting to some, lentils are incredibly versatile.
They can easily absorb the flavors of the spices and ingredients they are cooked with, so all you have to do is learn to season it properly.
Regarding nutrition, Lentils are loaded with protein, fiber, iron, and folate, which help support muscle growth, improve digestive health, boost energy levels, and promote overall well-being.
If you are new to lentils, I recommend adding them to soups, stews, salads, or my favorite, lentil burgers.
4. Avocado

If there’s one plant-based superfood that I will highly recommend adding to your dish daily, it is Avocado.
These bad boys are high in healthy monounsaturated fats, fiber, vitamins C, E, K, and B6, potassium.
It is one superfood most vegans and vegetarians love because of all the nutrients it contains in just one fruit.
Plus, it can be used in various dishes, from avocado toast to tacos to salads. The possibilities are endless regarding what you can do with an avocado.
5. Blueberries

It’s no surprise that blueberries are on this list of plant-based superfoods. This fruit is packed with antioxidants, vitamins, and fiber, making it a powerhouse for boosting your immune system and promoting overall health.
Although blueberries are not my favorite on the berry list, I try to enjoy them as much as possible in smoothie bowls, overnight oats, and mocktails.
Another great thing about blueberries is that they are low in calories but high in nutrients, making them a perfect snack for those looking to maintain a healthy weight while still getting a nutrient-rich meal.
