15 Signs You’re More Burnt Out Than You Realize

Feeling off but can't explain why? Here are 15 sneaky signs of burnout most of us miss, plus what actually helped me start to recover.

I used to think the signs of burnout would be obvious, like crying in a bathroom stall or googling ‘how to quit my job’ at 2am. You know… Something you’d notice.

Turns out that’s not usually how it shows up.

For me, burnout looked like reorganizing my pantry for the third time in a month instead of answering emails.

It looked like snapping at my husband over a dish left in the sink, then feeling weirdly guilty and unable to explain why I was so mad.

It looked like scrolling on TikTok for 45 minutes and not remembering a single thing I saw. I wasn’t falling apart. I was just… dimmer… Flatter. Running on the last 10% of a battery I didn’t realize I’d never fully charged.

If you’re reading this because something in your life feels “off” but you can’t quite name it, I want you to sit down, get comfy, and let your big sister (that’s me, hi) walk you through this.

Not to scare you or diagnose you. But to hold up a mirror, because sometimes we need someone else to say “hey, I see you” before we can see ourselves.

Here are 15 signs of burnout you might be missing, plus what actually helped me start to come back from it.

What Burnout Actually Is (And Why the Signs of Burnout Are So Easy to Miss)

Burnout isn’t just being tired. Tired is fixed by a good night’s sleep.

Burnout is what happens when your stress response has been switched on for so long that your body and brain start adapting to it as the new normal.

It’s chronic, not acute. And because it builds slowly, most of us don’t notice it happening. We just wake up one day and realize we don’t recognize ourselves anymore.

I didn’t have one bad week that tipped me over. I had about two bad years I kept explaining away. “I’m just busy right now.” “Things will calm down after this project.” “I’ll rest when I have time.” Sound familiar?

Once you know what to look for, the signs of burnout start showing up everywhere. Let’s get into it.

signs of burnout

1. You Feel Tired No Matter How Much You Sleep

This was my first real clue, though I ignored it for months.

I’d get eight, sometimes nine hours of sleep and still wake up feeling like I’d run a marathon in my dreams.

That’s because burnout fatigue isn’t really about hours logged. It’s a deeper, cellular kind of exhaustion that rest alone doesn’t touch, because the thing draining you (chronic stress) is still running in the background even while you sleep.

2. Small Tasks Feel Enormous

Answering one email used to take me two minutes.

During my worst burnout stretch, it took me an entire morning, not because the task was hard, but because I couldn’t make myself start.

If replying to a text or unloading the dishwasher feels like climbing a mountain, that’s not laziness. That’s your nervous system telling you it’s out of gas.

3. You’ve Gone Numb to Things You Used to Love

I run a food blog. I used to genuinely light up developing recipes. There was a stretch where I photographed an entire dish, plated it, styled it, the whole thing, and felt absolutely nothing.

Not tired of it.. not annoyed by it. Just blank. That emotional flatness toward things that used to bring you joy is one of the clearest burnout signs there is, and it’s also one of the easiest to miss because it doesn’t hurt. It just quietly disappears.

4. You’re Irritable Over Tiny Things

If you’ve snapped at your partner over a sock on the floor, or felt disproportionate rage at a slow driver, that’s worth paying attention to.

Irritability is often stress leaking out sideways because you don’t have the capacity to hold it in anymore. It’s rarely actually about the sock.

5. You Can’t Concentrate the Way You Used To

I’d sit down to write a blog post and read the same sentence six times without absorbing it.

My brain felt like it was wading through syrup. Burnout affects the prefrontal cortex, the part of your brain responsible for focus and decision making, so this brain fog isn’t in your head (well, it is, but you know what I mean). It’s a real, physiological response to chronic stress.

6. You’ve Started Dreading Things You Used to Handle Fine

Sunday used to just be Sunday. Then it became the day I’d feel a pit in my stomach thinking about the week ahead.

If your body has started bracing for your normal, everyday responsibilities like they’re threats, that’s your stress response working overtime.

7. You’re Getting Sick More Often

Chronic stress suppresses your immune system, plain and simple.

I used to pride myself on never getting sick. During my burnout year, I caught every cold that walked past me, and became severely iron deficient.

If you feel run down constantly or seem to catch every bug going around, your body might be telling you it doesn’t have the reserves to fight much of anything right now.

8. Your Body Is Talking to You (Headaches, Tension,  Stomach Issues)

Jaw clenching. Tension headaches. A stomach that’s suddenly unpredictable. These physical symptoms are so easy to treat as separate, unrelated annoyances.

But your body often expresses what your mind hasn’t caught up to yet. I white-knuckled through years of symptoms before I connected the dots.

9. You’ve Become Cynical, Even About Things You Care About

This one is subtle and honestly a little embarrassing to admit. I started feeling cynical about my own blog, the thing I built from nothing, the thing I love.

That creeping ‘what’s even the point’ feeling toward your work, your relationships, or your goals is a hallmark of burnout, especially the kind that comes from feeling like your effort isn’t being met with reward.

10. You Feel Disconnected From People You Love

I found myself sitting at dinner with my friends, physically present, mentally a thousand miles away. Not because anything was wrong between us, but because I simply didn’t have the bandwidth to connect.

Burnout doesn’t just drain your work capacity, it drains your relational capacity too, and that’s one of the losses that hurts the most once you notice it.

11. You Rely on Something to Get Through the Day

Maybe it’s your third coffee or tea by 11am. Maybe it’s scrolling.. or it’s a glass of wine every single night, not to enjoy it, but to come down off the day.

Leaning on something just to function is often a sign you’re trying to self-soothe a nervous system that’s been dysregulated for way too long.

12. You Feel Like You’re Failing, Even When You’re Not

This was one of the hardest ones for me to admit. Objectively, my blog was growing. I was hitting goals. And yet I felt like I was constantly falling short, constantly behind, constantly not enough.

Burnout distorts your self perception. It convinces you that the exhaustion is your fault, that you should be able to push through, and that everyone else has it together except you.

They don’t, by the way… Nobody does.

13. You Struggle to Feel Excited About the Future

Planning used to feel fun for me. A trip, a new project, a goal, any of it.

During burnout, I’d think about the future and just feel tired preemptively.

If thinking ahead feels heavy instead of hopeful, that flattened sense of possibility is worth taking seriously.

14. You’ve Stopped Doing the Things That Actually Recharge You

Ironically, burnout convinces you that you don’t have time for rest, right when you need it most.

I stopped reading for pleasure. Stopped taking walks without my phone. Stopped doing basically anything that wasn’t “productive,” which of course made everything worse.

If your hobbies have quietly disappeared from your life, that’s not a scheduling problem. It’s a burnout problem.

15. You Feel Like You’re Just Going Through the Motions

This is the big one, the one that finally got my attention.

I remember standing in my kitchen, functioning completely normally, cooking dinner, answering a text, and thinking “I feel like I’m watching myself do this instead of actually being here.”

That autopilot feeling, like you’re performing your own life rather than living it, is often the clearest sign that burnout has moved from ‘stressful season’ into something that needs real attention.

So What Do You Do With These Signs of Burnout?

Honestly? Start small. You don’t recover from burnout in a weekend, and I’d be lying to you if I said otherwise.

What actually helped me was giving myself permission to do less before I tried to do better.

I started saying no to things that weren’t essential. I put my phone in another room during dinner. I let myself read a book that had nothing to do with productivity or self improvement, just for fun.

If a lot of these signs of burnout feel familiar, please don’t just file this away as “interesting” and move on with your day like I did the first three times I read something like this.

Pick one thing. Just one. Maybe it’s an earlier bedtime this week. Maybe it’s finally telling a friend how tired you actually are instead of saying “I’m fine.” Maybe it’s talking to a doctor or therapist, because burnout that’s gone on long enough sometimes needs more support than a blog post can offer, and there is zero shame in that.

You deserve to feel like yourself again. I’m rooting for you.
