If there is one piece of advice I can give you to hold onto for the rest of your life, it is to stop labeling yourself.
We live in a world full of labels. From the moment we are born, society slaps us with a label.
It first begins with our gender, and as time goes on, other labels follow along, depending on the communities we join or the status we achieve.
These labels then dictate our behavior and shape our self-perception and the perception of the world.
Over time, we become so accustomed to these labels that they limit our full potential.
Breaking free from these so-called labels is key to discovering our authentic selves, allowing us to live more freely and fully.
In this post, I will share some strategies for letting go of these labels.
Since I started implementing them in my life, I have seen a huge shift in my mindset, which has allowed me to become the woman I am today fully.
My goal is that you too will break free from these labels and learn to live in your truth.
How to stop labeling yourself
1. Surround Yourself with open-minded individuals
I grew up in a very religious Christian household, and for the longest time growing up, I had no idea how much I limited myself as a result of that label.
Holding on to this label made me believe that I needed to act a certain way or talk a certain way to be considered a good Christian woman.
Not only that, but the community of people I surrounded myself with also reinforced these beliefs and labels.
It wasn’t until I finally left religion as a whole that I began to discover myself again.
Plus, the more time I spent around open-minded people, the more I saw the flaws in many of the belief systems I held onto growing up.
If you really want to stop labeling yourself, I highly suggest you come out of your bubble and surround yourself with people who think differently from you.
Doing so will open you up to a new world of possibilities and help you discover parts of yourself you never even knew existed.
2. Practice Positive Affirmations
I am a huge believer in the power of speaking positive affirmations.
By using your words to declare who you are and what you want to be, your brain starts to align your thoughts and actions with this new self-concept.
Saying things like ‘I am a free thinker’ or ‘I am creative’ allows you to reshape your identity on your own terms and break free from restrictive labels.
You can use my affirmations guide to help you reshape your thoughts and break free from labels that are holding you back
3. Practice Journaling Your Ideal Self Daily
Journaling is very powerful and can help you to stop labeling yourself.
When you begin to put words to paper, you immediately give form to your thoughts and emotions, allowing you to process and understand them better.
This act of self-expression helps you to identify and challenge the labels and beliefs you’ve internalized for so long. In turn, you can change these beliefs and remove these labels.
4. Release any Fear of Judgement
People will always judge you regardless of whether or not you slap a label on yourself.
The sooner you accept this truth, the easier it will be to let go and be your authentic self.
For example, when I labeled myself a Christian, I received a ton of judgment from Christians and non-Christians alike. Now that I am no longer identify with Christianity, I still receive judgment.
Needless to say, don’t worry about trying to please people.
Instead, focus on the people who love you FOR YOU and ignore any other voices that may try to diminish you or force these labels back on you.
5. Practice Meditation and Visualization
Whenever people hear the term ‘meditation,’ they automatically think of some spiritual woo-woo stuff.
However, the truth is that meditation has profound benefits for mental well-being. And combined with visualization, it becomes an even more powerful tool for personal growth.
Science has even shown that regular meditation can change the brain’s structure, improving areas related to emotional regulation, attention, and self-perception.
So, if you still think meditation is woo-woo, give it a try for yourself and see how you feel.
To stop labeling yourself using this method, I recommend you observe your thoughts without judgment and visualize yourself shedding the labels that others (or yourself) have tried to put on you.
With constant practice, you will start to see a shift in your mindset. You’ll begin to see yourself more clearly, unburdened by the labels that once constrained you.
